Mike Gwaltney
I am an educator, athletic coach, and engaged citizen.
I have been a teacher of History, Political Science, and other Social Science courses since 1991. Currently, I teach at both Marlborough School, and for the Online School for Girls. Additionally, I act as a Technology Integration Specialist at Marlborough.
Besides my day-to-day classroom teaching, I also provide training and consulting, and am available as a professional development workshop leader for educational organizations.
I am passionate about civic engagement and committed to helping young people develop the thinking ability and the awareness necessary to become powerful citizens in our democracy. I advocate for progressive education policies that recognize the needs of the student before any other, and see the development of critical thinking as paramount. My own experience of nearly 20 years as a professional educator has taught me that a quality education can be transformational - school should prepare students for university and career success, and create life-long learners who are adaptable to change. I believe that justice in society is possible if individuals recognize their responsibilities to each other, and that to achieve this end, schooling must emphasize collaboration and real world problem solving.
Aside from teaching and consulting, I am a certified endurance sports coach, working with triathletes to improve their performance in swimming, cycling, and running since 2003. I am also a licensed U.S. Soccer Federation coach with nearly 25 years experience coaching. I work with youth soccer players to improve their technical ability, tactical understanding, and their physical and mental fitness.
